Difference Between Turtle And Tortoise

We may be familiar with turtles in general. Equally, all of them are not entirely the same. Among the types of turtles are the tortoises. Seeing both of them for the first time or if you are not really familiar with the difference, you may not be able to tell the difference between turtle and tortoise. Tortoise is a reptile that generally lives on land, thus known as a land turtle. Tortoises belong to the family of Testudinidae and order Testudines. Similar to their marine relatives, the sea turtles, they are protected by shells. They can differ in size and are generally reclusive animals.

Essentially, biologists and ordinary people use the word ‘turtle’ to refer to all chelonians even to a tortoise, thus disregarding the difference between turtle and tortoise. By and large, turtles live in or close to a water body and are adapted to swimming though holding breath underwater. On the other hand, as mentioned above, tortoises thrive in dry regions and are intended to walk on sandy ground and build their water supply.

When it comes to biology, you will find out that a tortoise is a type of turtle but not all turtles are tortoises. That is what makes the distinction or the difference between turtle and tortoise. All types of aquatic and land turtles come in wide series of shapes, sizes and colors. There are types known as terrapins which refer to animals that fell somewhere between a tortoise and a turtle. They naturally thrive in marshy spots or start life underwater and sooner or later shift to arid land.

What is the other difference between turtle and tortoise so as to tell them apart? Turtles can thrive in the ocean, freshwater, marshland and brackish ponds while tortoises live fully above water, just wading into streams in order to clean themselves and to sip water. They can actually drown in sift and deep current. A turtle’s front feet can be fins and simply webbed toes with streamlined back feet for their swimming activity while a tortoise has feet which are scaly, hard and nubby to enable them to crawl across sharp sand and rocks.

To tell the difference between turtle and tortoise, you can observe their other physical characteristics and their other actions. Turtles have flatter backs than tortoises do and spend all or part of their lives underwater. Turtles mate and lay eggs underwater or on the shore. During chilly weather, they dig hole in mud and go into hibernation.

In terms of diet, it is easier to tell the difference between turtle and tortoise. The former is usually omnivore, consuming insects, fish and plants while the latter is herbivore, consuming shrubs, cactus and other plants which carry a lot of moisture.
