greek turtleGreek tortoise or also known as the Spur Thigh tortoise has several forms that appear all throughout its huge range. The tortoise that came from Mediterranean sea are more cold tolerant and normally loves to hibernates especially in the cold winter season. While some of this Greek tortoise that came from the Middle East and south of Mediterranean are less cold tolerant and doesn’t like much to hibernate. They differ from colors and shapes as well as from their needs.

They are primarily caught in wild thus make them susceptible and even host of parasites and other stress and environment related problems. if you are a novice owner then this tortoise is not ideal for you because they are prone to dietary and respiratory illnesses. This tortoise is small in sized (20 cm) though some can reach up to 30 cm. They have an attractive color but not too bright. You can find two spurs or two small tubercles one to each side of its tail. They have brown and yellowish carapace with some flecks, spots and sometimes some solid patches on it.

Their diet consists of high fiber, low in protein and high in calcium food. they are very fond of eating grass, hay, dandelions, and green leafy veggies. They also love to consume sweet fruits such as melons, apple and sweet fruits during the hot weather of summer. This tortoise should not be fed with any store bought dog or cat food because they are prone to renal health problems. Greek tortoise is timid and shy thus owner must give them a secured and safe place to live in. As being shy, they normally dislike to be handled. They will often hide inside their shells while covering their heads with their scaly legs.

They are born and live in dry and hot environment thus when you place them on a cold and damp place, you will notice they will start to develop some respiratory illnesses. Greek tortoise is susceptible to different kinds of pathogens and respiratory problems. If illnesses occur, see your vet as soon as possible to administer the right and proper meds for them.
