Herman Tortoises
Tortoises have different species and among them are the Herman tortoises or Testudo Hermanni. They are usually spelled in various forms. For transparency, it is more beneficial to use the Latin name since it is much more familiar all over the world. This is one of the smaller species of turtle and is a very popular pick for a pet. On the other hand, there are some factors to consider before finally deciding if it is the pet that you want.
Though the Herman tortoises are among the smaller species, they need a sunny and preferably an outdoor area that is arid and not very humid. They thrive in southern Europe, from the south of France through Greece, Italy and former Yugoslavia through Turkey. Their habitation has been eroded due to civilization since they prefer to thrive in Mediterranean forests, scrubby hillsides and grasslands. If you have provided the right type of pen and environment for the Herman tortoise, it will make an exceptional pet for so many years.
These species of the tortoise has golden brown in color along with two dark stripes underneath. Their domed-top shell known as carapace extends over their back legs and the males are smaller than the females. Female Herman tortoises can grow to ten inches long while the male grows from five to six inches on average.
Breeders help to ensure the longevity of the Herman tortoises and so, if you decide to get one of these resilient little pets, it is better to go to a reputable and trusted breeder. The habitat that provide for them must have a sunny portion, should not be very damp and contain lots of plants and vegetation wherein they can eat and hide. Make sure that you know more about the types of vegetation in order to place since some can prove to be toxic.
The Herman tortoises are turtle species which prefer to hibernate during the winter and can also hibernate during the summer. Either way, you have to be aware of the signs that your pet wants to hibernate. With that, you must be able to provide the suitable environment for hibernation but be cautious about it since hibernation can be fatal to a sick tortoise. Make sure that your pet is in good physical shape.
These species enjoy various herbivorous diet and that include soft fruits and plump vegetables. It is advisable for Herman tortoises to be provided with some kind of vitamins and mineral supplement though you still have to ensure that you measure the supplement properly since too much or too little of it can be very harmful to the health of your pet.
