Water Turtle Pet
Water turtles or marine turtles are among the very rare prehistoric creatures which have survived numerous odds yet still survive the world up to this time. You may find it hard to believe but yes, they exist for over hundred millions of years now, probably the oldest existing species here on earth. Turtles are extremely popular that they are even kept as pets. A water turtle pet, both the common and rare kinds, are marine and semi-marine animals.
The natural habitat of a marine turtle is the water wherein the love to swim and paddle. Their habitat also includes lakes, rivers, oceans and streams. A water turtle pet is gifted by nature with a useful pair of webbed feet that help them in paddling and swimming. Meanwhile, semi-marine turtles are found along marshes and swamps. Like their relatives, water turtles are extremely patient, slow, unflappable and placid creatures which can hide their head in their shell when they encounter danger.
There are various types of the water turtle pet. A lot of them can be found among pet stores and preferred by so many raisers and breeders. One of the water turtles is the African side necked turtle with a naturally inverted smile and a pug nose. This adds to its adorable appeal, making it known as a ‘good-looking’ turtle. It is also referred to as African mud turtle and includes 15 sub-species. Among the sub-species is the African Helmeted Turtle. They are fertile breeders, curious, aggressive, initially timid, hardy and adaptive.
Then, there is the red eared slider water turtle pet that also makes a great pet since they are fairly domesticated by nature particularly in captivity. They are hushed, calm and extremely hardy in their natural habitation. They are ‘low maintenance’ turtles. Red-eared sliders can be determined through their vivid red ears, thus the name ‘red-eared.’ In fresh waters, you can find them in thousands since they are productive species. Among their lovely color morphs are albino and pastel.
You can also find an excellent water turtle pet in the colorful painted turtles. You can find them by thousands in parts of the United States, Mexico and Canada. Among the common water turtles, they are the most visually appealing and most beautiful turtle species living on earth. The sub-species of the painted turtles include the Western painted turtle, Midland painted turtle, Southern painted turtle and the Eastern painted turtle. The younger ones are usually carnivorous while the adults are mostly herbivorous.
If there is the common water turtle pet, there are also the unusual breeds of the water turtle. Among them are the snapping turtle, the Argentine snake necked turtle, the pig nosed turtle which is also known as the fly river turtle and the mata mata turtle.
